Wetland Creation & Management in East Sussex: Restoring Natural Water Landscapes

Wetland construction and management for East Sussex landowners. Scrapes, reed beds, SuDS wetlands and habitat restoration. Serving estates, farms and conservation projects across Sussex.
Wetlands are among the most valuable habitats in the British landscape — and East Sussex is in a strong position to create and restore them. Whether you're a landowner looking to improve biodiversity, a farmer responding to environmental schemes, or an estate manager dealing with a wet area that's been a problem, wetland creation can turn unused or problematic land into a thriving ecological asset.
At Subsoil Land & Water, we design and construct wetland features across East Sussex — from small field scrapes to large reed bed filtration systems and habitat restoration projects.
Types of Wetland Projects We Undertake
Field Scrapes & Winter Ponds
Shallow, seasonally wet depressions that hold water in winter and dry out in summer. One of the simplest and most effective wetland features for biodiversity — supporting wading birds, amphibians, and invertebrates.
Reed Beds & Filtration Wetlands
Reed beds filter pollutants, absorb nutrients, and provide extraordinary habitat. We construct reed beds for wastewater treatment, surface water polishing, and habitat creation using Phragmites australis (common reed).
SuDS Wetlands
Sustainable Drainage Systems increasingly incorporate wetland features to manage surface water. We build SuDS wetlands that meet planning and Environment Agency requirements while looking like natural features.
Floodplain Reconnection
On estates and farms bordering rivers, reconnecting the floodplain reduces downstream flooding, creates wetland habitat, and improves water quality. We reprofile riverbanks, create backwaters and oxbow features, and remove barriers to natural floodplain function.
Habitat Restoration
Many wetland areas in East Sussex have been drained over the centuries. We can reverse historical drainage, re-establish water tables, and create conditions for wetland plants and animals to return.
Working With Environmental Schemes
Many wetland projects qualify for environmental funding or grant schemes. We can advise on Countryside Stewardship options, Biodiversity Net Gain requirements, Environment Agency permits, and Natural England consents for works in SSSIs or AONBs. We design and build the wetland features that qualify and can point you toward the right organisations for grant applications.
The Construction Approach
Wetland creation requires a lighter touch than standard groundworks. We use low-ground-pressure equipment to minimise soil compaction, laser levelling for precise water depth profiles, native plant sourcing, and phased construction where sensitive sites require it.
Based in Battle, we create and manage wetlands across Battle, Lewes, Hastings, Eastbourne, Uckfield, Crowborough, Hailsham, Pevensey Levels, and the wider East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent area. The Pevensey Levels and Cuckmere Valley in particular offer significant wetland potential for landowners.
