Soakaway Installation Contractors in Battle, East Sussex
We design and install soakaways across Battle, East Sussex and the wider South East to manage surface water sustainably and prevent flooding. Soakaways are underground structures that collect surface water runoff and allow it to soak gradually into the surrounding soil, reducing the burden on drainage systems and preventing waterlogging. We install gravel soakaways, crate soakaway systems and attenuation systems engineered for the chalk, clay and sandstone soils of Kent and East Sussex. Whether you need a soakaway for a driveway in Battle, a crate soakaway system for a development site in Eastbourne, or a surface water soakaway for a rural property in Hailsham, our own plant and experienced team deliver SuDS-compliant solutions built to last.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a soakaway?
A soakaway is an underground structure that collects surface water — from roofs, driveways, patios and drainage systems — and allows it to soak gradually into the surrounding soil. Soakaways can be simple gravel-filled pits or modular crate systems. We install soakaways across Battle, East Sussex, Kent and Surrey, sized to handle the required surface water volume.
Do soakaways work in clay soil?
Soakaways can work in clay soil, but they need to be larger and deeper than in chalk or sandy soils because clay drains slowly. In heavy Wealden clay, we often recommend crate soakaway systems with attenuation and a controlled outfall rather than a simple gravel pit. We assess soil conditions during the site survey and design the soakaway accordingly.
What are soakaway crates?
Soakaway crates are modular plastic attenuation units that create a large underground void space for storing surface water. Wrapped in geotextile membrane and buried in the ground, they hold much more water than a gravel pit of the same size and allow it to soak away gradually. Crate soakaways are the modern standard for SuDS-compliant surface water management.
Do you carry out percolation tests?
Yes. We carry out percolation testing to determine the soil's infiltration rate, which determines how large the soakaway needs to be. Percolation testing is required under Building Regulations Part H3 for surface water drainage, and we ensure all soakaways are correctly sized for the ground conditions.
Can you repair a failed soakaway?
Yes. We repair and replace failed soakaways that have collapsed, silted up or stopped draining. Common causes include silt ingress, root penetration, and soil compaction. We excavate the failed system, install a new soakaway with proper geotextile wrapping and clean backfill, and connect it to the existing drainage system.
